INTRO TO PATTERN GRADING

*Suitable for Confident Beginners who have experience of using a sewing machine & basic pattern knowledge*

As with most clothing brands, patterns have their own standard sizings. You will notice when buying clothes different brands are all slightly different in the way they fit. The same goes for different brands of patterns and most won't relate to a size you buy in the shops. This pattern grading workshop teaches you how to take a regular sewing pattern and grade it to suit your size/shape. Looking at how to alter if you are inbetween sizes, how to grade up or down if your size isn't on the scale. Everybody is different and very rarely matches the exact size a particular pattern is based on.

What will we do:

We will teach you how to measure yourself properly so you can identify the right size on a sewing pattern or know where we need to then grade/alter the pattern just for you. You will work through some basic grading based on your pattern you have brought so you are clear on how to alter sizing and we will then make sure we alter to your own specifications where needed.

You will need:

-To bring a pattern you have or one you would like to work with, it may be good to bring one or two extra with you as well just depending on the complexity of each and how quickly you work.

-Pattern Cutting Equipment if you have any for example 2H pencil, pattern master or fashion curve, tracing wheel, carbon paper. We do have some tools to use in the workshop itself but we also have certain items you can purchase ahead or on the day.

-We have the tea, coffee & biccies sorted oh and the view so feel free to bring your lunch or anything specific needed for your own dietary requirements.

Our She Shed studio is equipped with a toilet & kitchen facilities (microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge etc) & free parking on site.

PATTERN ALTERATIONS-For Your Perfect Fit

*Suitable for Confident Beginners who are eager to progress with dressmaking.*

Do you struggle finding patterns or clothes to fit properly? As with most clothing brands, patterns have their own standard sizings. Unless you are lucky enough to be the exact size of the template then it’s likely that to get a good fit you’ll need to make some tweaks. This pattern alteration workshop will show you how to make those tweaks and make the pattern your own.

Some of the common pattern adjustments needed:

  • Lengthen/Shorten
  • Merging different sizes together
  • Dart Manipulation – moving/repositioning
  • Back Adjustments
  • Shoulder Adjustments
  • Neckline Adjustments
  • Full/Small Bust Adjustment
  • Waist/Hip Adjustments

You won't be making a completed garment in this course, however you will be making a calico toile/mock garment which may be only a section, so you can see your alteration taking shape.

What will we do:

We will teach you how to measure yourself properly and extra measurements that will be useful for making certain adjustments. You will then work with guidance on our chosen pattern and make the adjustments needed for your fitting issues to make that pattern work for you.

You will need:

-To bring a pattern you have been having trouble sizing correctly with you. We will need advance warning of which pattern you will be bringing so we can familiarise ourselves with it beforehand. Also if you have attempted the pattern before and made a garment but its not quite right please bring it along.

-Calico or something similar for your mock sample, we do have stock which can be purchased on the day.
